Old Down Wildlife Group

Old Down is a site of some 12 hectares of calcareous grassland (or chalk meadowland). The central area is managed as wildflower meadow with many native species. The surrounding areas are copses and verges of trees, shrubs and hedgerow. Old Down is a priority site for the Small Blue Butterfly as identified by Butterfly Conservation with the highest numbers recorded over other sites Hampshire. There are many other species of butterfly on the site.

Old Down Group manage this 24-acre site of woodland and open grassland with wonderful views for the benefit of local people and wildlife. Our aims include improving wildflower and wildlife diversity and raising awareness and understanding of wildlife and how to enjoy it. After more than 7 years of work on the sites some areas of this green space are of LNR quality but all of it is a haven for wildlife and people. The aim is to improve biodiversity by maintaining and improving the wildflower meadow, increasing insect and bird species and numbers on the sites. Work parties operate weekly and new volunteers are always welcome.

Work parties on Old Down every Thursday 10 – 12noon. And some monthly weekend work parties as well – be sure to check social media for updates! Meeting at Old Down Hall.

We are a friendly group keen to maintain Old Down as a natural area and keen to learn about wildlife and nature. We are always looking for new people to join us. Training (free) is available via Basingstoke and Deane Council such as tool use, first aid, wildlife.
