Youth, DofE, Students and Skills-Based Volunteering

Youth, DofE, students and skills-based volunteering

Natural Basingstoke wants to help more young people connect with nature, develop skills and take positive action for wildlife in their local area.

Some of our volunteering opportunities may be suitable for young people, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants, students, Scouts, youth groups or people looking to build conservation-related experience. This might include practical conservation, wildlife recording, events, community engagement, communications, research or project-based support.

Because we are a small volunteer-led charity, opportunities depend on the activity, location, supervision requirements, safeguarding considerations and the capacity of the relevant group. We cannot guarantee that every request can be supported, but we are always happy to discuss what may be possible.

Young people and students might be able to help with:

  • practical conservation sessions with a local group;
  • wildlife recording and citizen science activities;
  • supporting nature events or community stalls;
  • helping create posters, social media content or videos;
  • writing short articles or nature guides;
  • helping with school, Scout or youth group activities;
  • supporting research or mapping projects;
  • helping develop resources for younger audiences;
  • taking part in structured project work where suitable.

We may also be able to support skills-based volunteering for students or early-career volunteers interested in ecology, conservation, planning, communications, education, fundraising, charity administration, GIS or environmental policy.

Important information for under-18s

Under-18 volunteering must be agreed in advance. Some activities may require a parent, guardian, teacher, youth leader or other responsible adult to attend. Suitability will depend on the task, the site, the tools being used, supervision arrangements and the capacity of the group leading the activity.

For Duke of Edinburgh’s Award volunteering, please contact us before listing Natural Basingstoke as your volunteering placement so we can confirm whether a suitable opportunity is available.
